Albanian Alps circuit: Theth, Valbonë & Koman
One Shkodër-based circuit, two directions: a mountain crossing, Koman Lake ferry and road transfers, with optional Shala and Theth outings.

Over the pass. Home by the water.
Choose the lake first or the mountains first. Keep the crossing at the heart of the journey, then make room for a slow day in Theth or a separate trip up the Shala River. This is one circuit, not a checklist of every nearby attraction.
Choose your direction and keep a full day for the pass. Walking, boat and road references are distinct on the map; arrange transport and check mountain conditions for your dates.

11 of 11 places have a sourced location. Pins mark places, not entrances, trailheads or boarding points. This guide is for planning: your saved checkpoints are unchanged, and browsing a direction never changes them.
the mountain day
Theth → Valbona Pass → Fusha e Gjes
13.2 km mapped crossing
The solid walking line runs between the Theth bridge and Fusha e Gjes, via Valbona Pass. It excludes the road approach to Valbonë village. It is a connected OpenStreetMap network reference, not a newly surveyed or official navigation track.
Download the walking reference GPXAllow a full walking day
The published Peaks of the Balkans itinerary is rated moderate and gives seven hours. Pace, snow, weather and your actual start point can change that substantially. Do not combine an uncertain crossing finish with a last ferry connection.
Read the published trail descriptionAscent and descent: source scope matters
The historical published Theth → Fusha e Gjes itinerary reports 13.9 km, 1,068 m up and 792 m down. Those figures describe the published itinerary, not an elevation survey of our displayed line. The downloadable mapped reference has no added or estimated elevation samples.
Arrange the valley approach
The published hike ends at Fusha e Gjes, with Valbonë centre another 3.5 km along the valley road. Your host can advise the actual pickup or walking approach. In this circuit that connection is shown separately as a road transfer; Theth and Valbonë are suggested overnight bases, not included bookings.
Check snow, weather, remaining daylight and path conditions with a local host or guide. Carry suitable footwear, warm and waterproof layers, food, water and an offline map. A mapped stream or seasonal café is not a promise of safe drinking water or an open supply stop. Do not treat this as an all-season road connection. In an emergency in Albania, call 112.
Trail-project safety informationThe ferry is a real lake segment
The blue boat line follows the mapped Koman–Fierzë ferry way between separately identified terminal records. It is not a straight connection between villages. Confirm your operator’s boarding point. Berisha’s timetable, checked 12 October 2026, lists Koman 09:00 and Fierzë 13:00; these are operator-specific published departures, not availability for your date.
Current sailing and transfer informationThe road home stays in the plan
After arriving at Koman, continue to Shkodër by road. The brown dashed lines are independently routed road overviews. Arrange the driver or minibus, luggage and pickup point separately; they do not imply a booked vehicle or live road clearance.
Operator transport optionsShala is optional, not a ferry stop
Use the map’s optional-boat switch to see Koman ↔ Lumi i Shalës. A return excursion and the separately advertised Koman–Shala–Fierzë tour are different products. The normal through-ferry is not assumed to stop at Shala, and no equivalent reverse tour is assumed.
Check the specific through-tourTwo kinds of trail reference
The downloadable GPX uses mapped OpenStreetMap geometry assembled at build time, with source records retained in the route data. The original published crossing GPX was recorded in 2011. Its date and endpoint scope are retained, rather than presenting it as a new survey.

The journey, chapter by chapter
Shkodër → Theth → Valbonë → Fierzë ferry terminal → Koman → Shkodër. The lake is the return journey, not part of the hike.
The road to Theth
Travel from Shkodër into the valley and stay in Theth. The bridge marks the walking reference endpoint; your guesthouse and transfer pickup may be elsewhere in the village.
Give the valley some time
An optional extra night leaves room for Grunas or the Theth Blue Eye. Those outings are separate from the crossing and need their own access and walking plan.
Walk over the pass into Valbonë
Walk from the Theth bridge over Valbona Pass to Fusha e Gjes, then arrange the onward road approach to your Valbonë accommodation. Do not silently add the village approach to the mapped crossing distance. Overnight in Valbonë.
Come home by the lake
Transfer from Valbonë to the Fierzë / Raja ferry terminal, sail to Koman and continue by road to Shkodër. Check the return sailing rather than reversing the outward timetable. A Shala excursion is a separate booking.

Optional outings
Separate from the core journey. Each needs its own access and transport plan.
Lumi i Shalës · optional boat outing
The mapped boat reference connects Koman terminal with a Shala landing. It is not the regular Koman–Fierzë ferry. Book a return excursion or the operator’s specifically advertised Koman–Shala–Fierzë product; do not assume a reverse through-service.

Grunas Waterfall
6.2 km return walk · 3.1 km each way
Start: Theth bridge. Walk out and back to the same Theth bridge start. No return transport is included.
Plan: Allow a half day. This is a planning allowance, not a measured duration. Allow extra time for stops, rough terrain and the return before dark.
Check before you walk: The mapped Grunas footbridge is tagged as poorly maintained. Ask locally about the current crossing; turn back if the bridge is damaged or unsafe. This reference ends on the mapped footpath about 23 m from the waterfall location, not in the water.
The GPX follows the mapped footpath out and back. No road transfers or invented elevation figures are included. OpenStreetMap network reference checked 2026-10-13; not an official survey or confirmation that crossings are usable.
Mapped crossing notes
"Waterfall Grunas" Route: the source records poor maintenance. Check the actual condition locally.
Blue Eye from Ndërlysaj
Two different days, not two names for the same short walk. Choose the approach in the map controls above; the Blue Eye remains optional in either main circuit direction.
From Ndërlysaj, after a road transfer
6.4 km return walk · 3.2 km each way
Start: Ndërlysaj road junction. Arrange a road transfer from Theth to the mapped Ndërlysaj road junction, then walk out and back. The GPX contains only the walk; the road approach is separate.
Plan: Allow a half day, plus transfers. This is a planning allowance, not a measured duration. Allow extra time for stops, rough terrain and the return before dark.
Check before you walk: The mapped walk includes two stream crossings and steep mountain-path sections. Ask locally about water levels and the usable crossing before setting out. Do not enter unsafe water. The reference ends on the footpath about 9 m from the Blue Eye location.
The GPX follows the mapped footpath out and back. No road transfers or invented elevation figures are included. OpenStreetMap network reference checked 2026-10-13; not an official survey or confirmation that crossings are usable.
Mapped crossing notes
2 distinct stream crossings are recorded in the source. They are also included as caution waypoints in the GPX. The return repeats the same crossings.
The mapped road from Theth is about 6.8 km each way. Arrange transport and a pickup with your host; the road line is a router reference, not a reserved ride or a current road-condition report. The walk includes steep mountain-path sections, not an accessible riverside stroll.
The longer walk from Theth
21.2 km return walk · 10.6 km each way
Start: Theth bridge, via Ndërlysaj. Walk out and back to the same Theth bridge start. No return transport is included.
Plan: A long, full walking day. This is a planning allowance, not a measured duration. Allow extra time for stops, rough terrain and the return before dark.
Check before you walk: The full walk includes six mapped stream crossings and two bridges tagged as poorly maintained. Check the current trail and crossings with a local host or guide. Do not use a damaged bridge or attempt unsafe water. This is a long return walk, not the short Ndërlysaj outing.
The GPX follows the mapped footpath out and back. No road transfers or invented elevation figures are included. OpenStreetMap network reference checked 2026-10-13; not an official survey or confirmation that crossings are usable.
Mapped crossing notes
6 distinct stream crossings are recorded in the source. They are also included as caution waypoints in the GPX. The return repeats the same crossings.
"Waterfall Grunas" Route: the source records poor maintenance. Check the actual condition locally.
Ura e Gerles: the source records poor maintenance. Check the actual condition locally.
For experienced walkers with enough daylight and confirmed local access. Use the shorter Ndërlysaj approach instead when the long valley walk, bridges or stream crossings are unsuitable. Neither option promises safe swimming.

The details that make the trip work
Book the direction, not just “the ferry”
Check the operator’s current timetable, departure landing, transfer pickup and luggage arrangements for your date. Transport legs are never included in a walking-distance total.
SourceShala needs its own connection
The standard crossing and the Shala excursion are different products. A separately advertised Koman–Shala–Fierzë tour does not establish an equivalent reverse connection.
SourceCheck the pass before setting out
Ask locally about snow, weather and trail access. Choose the walking day around current conditions, not a fixed calendar promise.
Agree on your pickup points
Village pins help you get your bearings. Confirm the actual ferry landing, pickup and walking start with the operator.
