About this challenge

The classic crossing of the Albanian Alps, carried by a chain of local people: a driver to the Koman dock, the lake ferry to the far shore, a driver up the Valbona valley, your Valbona guide over the pass, and your Theth guide down through the village to the lock-in tower, the Grunas waterfall and the Blue Eye of Theth.

Overview

This route crosses the Albanian Alps. It begins in Shkodra, the gateway city, with the walk up to Rozafa castle, trades the road for the lake ferry at Koman, follows the road up the Valbona valley through Bajram Curri and Dragobi to the guesthouses of Valbonë, crosses the Valbona pass on foot past the hamlet of Rragam, and comes down into Theth for the lock-in tower, the Grunas waterfall and the Blue Eye of Theth near Nderlysaj.

The people who carry you

No single person takes you across, and that is the point. The crossing starts in Shkodra itself: you arrive, sleep low in the gateway city, and walk up to Rozafa castle, where the story of the mountains begins. A driver meets you there and brings you up to the Koman dock in the early morning. At the dock the ferry crew takes over, and the boat carries you up the lake to the landing on the far shore. A Tropoja driver waits there, and the road climbs beside the Valbona river, through Bajram Curri and Dragobi, to the guesthouses of Valbonë, where you sleep. In the morning your Valbona guide walks with you out of the valley, along the dry riverbed past the hamlet of Rragam, and up to Qafa e Valbonës, the pass between the two valleys and the high point of the crossing. The pass is where the route changes hands: your Valbona guide brings you down the far side into Theth and hands you to your Theth guide in the village. From there your Theth guide walks the last stage with you: first the lock-in tower at the edge of the village, then south through the valley to the Grunas waterfall, and on to the Blue Eye near Nderlysaj, where the cold blue water closes the crossing. Five sets of hands, one crossing.

Who it is for

It is for walkers who want more than the pass day: the lake, the valley road, the crossing on foot, and the people who carry each stage. This is a guided journey, not a marked self-guided trail.

How this route was placed

This is an early route, published with the twelve stops we have located against public map data: Shkodra, Rozafa castle, Koman, Bajram Curri, Dragobi, Valbonë, Rragam, Qafa e Valbonës, Theth, the lock-in tower, the Grunas waterfall and the Blue Eye of Theth. Two of them carry a note on how they were placed. Shkodra's pin is the city itself, and the city's own boundary on the map confirms it. Rragam is one of two villages that share the name; the shape of the route settles it, because only one of them sits under the pass beside Valbonë, and that is the one shown. One stop is still held back: Fierza, where two villages named Fierzë face each other at the ferry landing and the map alone cannot say which bank the boat touches. The history of the lake and its dam, the ferry timetable, and the story of the tower all need cited sources before they are told here. The guides are listed as roles, not names: each slot is a real person being arranged, and a name appears only when that guide has confirmed.
