APPALACHIAN TRAIL · WEST VIRGINIA

West Virginia

A place to meet the trail

At Harpers Ferry, the A.T. passes through a town whose history cannot be reduced to a resupply stop. Nearby, the ATC headquarters has become a place for hikers to record a moment in their journeys.

Something to notice

What would you put in a photograph of your own walk: the view, a companion, or something ordinary you want to remember?

Hikers have been photographed at the ATC visitor center since the 1970s. Harpers Ferry is often called the trail’s psychological halfway point, not its measured midpoint.

Planning note

Check the current footbridge notice before planning a connection into Maryland. A town chapter is not confirmation that every crossing is open.
