APPALACHIAN TRAIL · MARYLAND

Maryland

The ridge carries history

Along South Mountain, the trail crosses a landscape of wooded ridges, monuments and Civil War history. It is a place to take the walk in smaller pieces, with time left to understand what the path passes.

Something to notice

At a signed historic site, read the account before looking back at the terrain. Does knowing what happened change what you see?

The Maryland A.T. passes sites including the original Washington Monument and Civil War battlefields. Interpretation belongs with the specific place and its evidence, not with an invented trail-wide story.

Planning note

Verify designated overnight sites and return transport. Treat the Harpers Ferry connection separately until the current crossing arrangements are confirmed.
