This dramatic opening stage starts from the iconic Lago di Braies, one of the most photographed lakes in the Dolomites. The route climbs steadily through spruce forests and rocky switchbacks, reaching the alpine plateau surrounding Rifugio Biella. Along the way, hikers pass scree slopes and limestone outcrops that mark the edge of the Fanes mountain group.
