Or use a smaller regional file. These follow the source agency’s regions, not state boundaries or suggested daily stages.

Reference tracks, not verified navigation.

Check official maps, access and current trail notices before a walk. Keep track segments separate in your GPS app: a line joining a gap is not a route. Some devices have point limits; smaller regional files may work better.

What’s in the files and where they came from

The full GPX contains 3,025 source features, 3,027 separate parts and 689,718 points. Its four regional files cover the same source records; do not add their mileage to the full file.

12 source records have unresolved publication metadata; these remain marked in GPX extensions. Source survey dates vary, and many records retain a June 2023 version label. Downloading them today does not make them a fresh survey or establish that a crossing is open.

The National Park Service identifies the data as Public Domain for general mapping. The source does not grant access to private land. Waypoints, water reports, accommodation and the uploaded personal itinerary are not included.
