APPALACHIAN TRAIL · NEW JERSEY

New Jersey

Another kind of mountain walk

Here the A.T. passes through woodlands, bogs and wetlands as well as rocky climbs. The Wallkill River National Wildlife Refuge is part of the journey. A summit is not the only reason to come.

Something to notice

From the established path, stay still and listen before looking for birds. How many directions do the sounds come from?

The refuge and wetland sections are part of New Jersey’s A.T. landscape, not diversions from it. Wildlife encounters are never guaranteed; a quiet pause can still change the walk.

Planning note

Check current flooding and access notices. A boardwalk does not establish accessibility for the full route; check the specific start, surface and facilities.
