APPALACHIAN TRAIL · MASSACHUSETTS

Massachusetts

A day in the Berkshires

The trail through the Berkshires links highlands, river walks and shaded glens. You do not need to cross the state to experience that variety. A short walk can have its own beginning, change of scene and return.

Something to notice

When the woodland becomes darker, what changes underfoot? Stop on the path to notice before you try to name the trees.

A change of light, leaf litter or ground cover can give you something to investigate without identifying every species. Stay on the path and compare what you notice before and after the woodland changes.

Planning note

Use a route’s stated trailhead. A different approach can change the total considerably; summit spurs and the return trip must be counted separately.
