APPALACHIAN TRAIL · GEORGIA

Georgia

The first white blaze

The trail begins on Springer Mountain, in the forests of northern Georgia. For a northbound thru-hiker this is a beginning. For someone with an afternoon, it can be a whole experience in itself.

Something to notice

When you find a white blaze, look for the next one before moving on. What makes a path readable?

A path this long still depends on small decisions made by people: a mark on a tree, a cleared branch, a maintained crossing. The southern terminus is Springer Mountain; the approach from Amicalola is a separate journey.

Planning note

Separate the Amicalola approach from main-trail mileage. Choose and verify the actual access point rather than assuming the southern terminus is a drive-up start.
