# Via Egnatia: Adriatic to Lake Ohrid

https://www.wyld.quest/challenge/via-egnatia-durres-lin

Packet: wyld-quest:via-egnatia-durres-lin | Version: 2026-10-09.4 | State: review

Roman baths, a stone-weight clock, Illyrian tombs and a river bridge in Mokra. Five suggested days from Durrës to Pogradec on Lake Ohrid, with quieter village and mountain outings to add when you have more time.

Suggested itinerary, not navigation or confirmed availability. Optional outings are separate routes.

## From the Adriatic to the lake, through Mokra

Primary itinerary.

Five suggested days, four nights. Begin in Durrës, stop in Peqin and at Ad Quintum before Elbasan. Give day three to Golik Bridge and the Selcë tombs in Mokra, reaching Lin for the night. Explore Lin the next morning, then continue along the lake to Pogradec for the final night. Keep day five for its lakeshore and old town. Confirm access first rather than treating this as a fixed tour.

### 1. Durrës. Begin where the road met the sea.
Day one belongs to the city. Make the Roman amphitheatre the focus of a walk through central Durrës, then leave time for the waterfront. Start beside the Adriatic before heading inland: Durrës was one of the road’s western gateways. Check admission separately; the city pin is not the amphitheatre entrance.
Places: Durrës

### 2. Peqin and Ad Quintum. How people travelled.
On day two, stop in Peqin for the castle and clock tower: the tourism agency describes a clock once driven by stone weights. At Ad Quintum near Bradashesh, look for the bath rooms and underfloor-heating remains of a Roman rest and horse-changing station. Finish in Elbasan’s lived-in castle neighbourhood. These smaller stops are the point of the day, not names to pass on the motorway. Confirm site access and use road transfers between them.
Places: Durrës → Peqin Castle → Peqin Clock Tower → Ad Quintum · Roman station & baths → Elbasan

### 3. Mokra. A river bridge and tombs cut into a hillside.
Leave Elbasan on day three for Golik Bridge and Selcë e Poshtme before reaching Lin for the night. Keep this day for the inland visits, with your luggage and onward transport arranged. At Golik, look for the small opening between the two main arches: this is a seventeenth-century bridge on an older travel corridor, not a Roman structure. At Selcë, compare the rock-cut tomb façades with the stone-vaulted tomb. These are Illyrian monuments, not Roman graves. Confirm restoration access and the Golik–Selcë road before leaving; if access is restricted, omit the affected visit rather than improvise. Final approaches are on foot. Do not divert onto the unstable Mirakë–Babjë walking section or assume a direct mountain shortcut to Lin; the historic paving in our photograph is not an access recommendation.
Places: Elbasan → Golik Bridge → Selcë e Poshtme · Illyrian tombs → Lin

### 4. Lin. A village morning, then along the lake.
Spend day four’s morning in Lin’s village lanes, with time for a locally confirmed peninsula walk and the early Christian basilica; ask whether the mosaics can be seen. After the inland sites, let the village and lake set a slower pace. Then continue south by road to Pogradec for the final night, with luggage and pickup arranged separately. This is a road transfer between the two lakeside places, not a continuous shoreline walking route. Keep Pogradec’s old town and lakeshore for the final day.
Places: Lin → Pogradec

### 5. Pogradec. End with the lake and the old town.
Spend day five on Pogradec’s lakeshore and in the old town, where the national tourism agency highlights Ottoman and Balkan architecture. Leave time for a slow town walk before departure. Arrange your onward journey or vehicle return from Pogradec separately. The city pin is for orientation, not an entrance or pickup point; this Albania edition does not cross the border.
Places: Pogradec

## Deeper Mokra · Potkozhani or Shën Marena

Optional excursion, separate from the core journey.

From Pogradec, choose a separate village outing or a more demanding monastery day. These are alternatives to plan with extra time, not compulsory stops crammed into the Golik–Selcë day.

### 1. Potkozhani. A village beyond the headline sights.
The national tourism agency highlights Potkozhani’s cultural heritage and one of the area’s oldest schools. Make this a slow village visit, with local permission and respect for private homes. A meal, school visit or festival is not included or guaranteed. Confirm the approach and return transport; we do not claim the Roman trunk road passed through the village.
Places: Pogradec → Potkozhani → Pogradec

### 2. Shën Marena. Look up at the painted ceiling.
Near Llëngë, the monastery church has frescoes attributed by the municipality to Kostandin Shpataraku and a painted wooden ceiling. The same inventory connects its carved iconostasis style with Voskopojë and Vithkuq. This is later sacred history in Mokra, not Roman infrastructure. The undated approach advice calls for a high-clearance 4×4 to Kryqi and a final walk. Confirm road conditions and church opening before travel. Read the spring and cave traditions as living belief, not an invitation to enter a cave, drink untreated water or take stones.
Places: Pogradec → Shën Marena · Llëngë → Pogradec

## Guri i Kamjes · a ship of stone above the forest

Optional excursion, separate from the core journey.

An optional mountain day from Pogradec for a change of scale and scenery. It is a nature excursion, not a claimed Egnatia stop.

### 1. See the rock from the surrounding landscape.
The municipality describes Guri i Kamjes as a ship-like rock rising above the forest, with a drive-and-walk approach from the Pogradec side. Arrange road transport only to a locally confirmed starting point, then choose an appropriate walk for the weather and your group. Do not navigate a car to the rock pin or assume the summit is a safe family scramble. Bring water, use established paths and leave the stone untouched.
Places: Pogradec → Guri i Kamjes → Pogradec

## Voskopojë · painted churches and a different mountain story

Optional excursion, separate from the core journey.

A separate southern extension from Pogradec towards Korçë, with an extra night rather than a rushed addition to the five-day journey. Not a verified stop on the original Roman trunk road.

### 1. Continue towards the churches of Voskopojë.
Continue from Pogradec by the established road approach towards Korçë and Voskopojë, confirming the route and accommodation separately. Give the frescoes and icons time; ask locally which churches are open, including Shën Kolli and Shën Mëria. Link the artwork with the later church traditions seen in Mokra, not an invented Roman alignment. Do not assume a direct drivable mountain shortcut from Llëngë. Your onward or return journey is separate.
Places: Pogradec → Voskopojë

## Apollonia · a separate western branch

Optional excursion, separate from the core journey.

Add an extra coastal day to visit Apollonia near Fier and return to Durrës. The road had two western beginnings; visiting both is not required to follow this edition east.

### 1. Take time for the other beginning.
Arrange a separate road outing to Apollonia Archaeological Park and back to Durrës. Confirm admission, the entrance and transport before leaving. Its older location records conflict, so the park remains in the itinerary without a potentially misleading pin. This is not a compulsory detour in the five-day plan.
Places: Durrës → Apollonia Archaeological Park → Durrës

## Stays and practical information

### An old road is not automatically a safe trail
Checked 12 October 2026: the Foundation’s undated notices report construction diversions near Broshka and Valas and an unstable section between Mirakë and Babjë. We exclude that walking section and do not recommend an improvised bypass. Check its notices again before travelling. The 2016 photograph is historical illustration, not current access evidence.
Availability: unknown.

### Four nights, four bases
Use a car or separately arranged road transfers. Suggested nights: Durrës, Elbasan, Lin, then Pogradec. Leave Elbasan with your luggage for the Golik–Selcë visits and continue to Lin for night three. Explore Lin the next morning before the road transfer to Pogradec; optional outings from there need extra time. Confirm the route, final walking approach and pickup at each site rather than driving to a map pin. Self-drivers need a vehicle-return plan. The journey ends at Pogradec; return transport is separate, with no fare or timetable promised.
Availability: unknown.

### Base in Durrës · night one
Choose a coastal base for the first night. Add a second coastal night only for the separate Apollonia day. Nothing is included or reserved.
Availability: unknown.

### Base in Elbasan · night two
Stay in the city after Peqin and Ad Quintum. Arrange your room and next-day road transfer separately.
Availability: unknown.

### Base in Lin · night three
Stay in Lin after Golik and Selcë. Leave the village, peninsula and basilica for the next morning before continuing to Pogradec. Confirm accommodation, luggage arrangements and pickup separately.
Availability: unknown.

### Base in Pogradec · night four
Stay in Pogradec after the Lin village visit and lakeside road transfer. The fifth day is for the lakeshore and old town before your onward journey. Confirm accommodation, arrival and vehicle return separately; nothing is included or reserved.
Availability: unknown.

### Durrës · the road’s sea-facing beginning
Start with the Roman amphitheatre in central Durrës, then walk towards the waterfront. Think of the city as a gateway between a sea crossing and an inland journey, rather than just an arrival point. Check admission separately. The pin marks the city, not the monument entrance.
Availability: unknown.
https://akt.gov.al/en/atraksionet/amfiteatri-durres/

### Peqin · a town that kept time with stones
Pair the castle with the clock tower. The tourism agency describes a nineteenth-century mechanism powered by the weight of stones, ringing the passing hours. Look at the tower from the public square; do not assume access to the mechanism. This is a later layer of life around the Egnatia corridor, not a Roman clock.
Availability: unknown.
https://akt.gov.al/en/atraksionet/kulla-e-sahatit-te-peqinit/

### Peqin Castle · older foundations, later walls
The castle’s story spans ancient foundations and Ottoman rebuilding. Look for changes in the masonry rather than treating everything standing as Roman. Confirm any interior access locally; a visit to the town does not guarantee the castle is open.
Availability: unknown.
https://akt.gov.al/en/atraksionet/kalaja-e-peqinit/

### Ad Quintum · change horses, take a bath
At this Roman rest and horse-changing station near Bradashesh, hot, warm and cold rooms sat alongside an underfloor-heating system. Look for the surviving room divisions and heating remains: a roadside stop was infrastructure for both bodies and journeys. Confirm access and view the remains without climbing on them.
Availability: unknown.
https://akt.gov.al/en/attractions/station-ad-quintum-archaeological-site/

### Elbasan · a lived-in castle neighbourhood
Finish the inland day on foot inside the castle neighbourhood. This is part of a living city, not only a monument: keep private entrances clear and allow time for its streets. Ancient Scampa connects the city to the road east.
Availability: unknown.
https://akt.gov.al/en/atraksionet/kalaja-e-elbasanit/

### Golik · look between the arches
Two main arches carry the crossing, with a smaller relieving opening between them. The municipality dates the standing bridge to the seventeenth century and places it on an older Egnatia branch along the upper Shkumbin. Its undated access advice recommends the final descent on foot because the rough approach is not drivable to the bridge. Confirm conditions and avoid river entry.
Availability: unknown.
https://go2pogradec.al/atraksione/historia-dhe-arkeologjia-1/ura-e-golikut-10/

### Selcë · architecture cut out of the hillside
The municipal inventory describes five Illyrian monumental tombs: four cut into rock and one built with a stone vault. Compare their façades from the permitted visitor areas; these are not Roman graves. RTSH reported shelter restoration on 9 October 2026, so confirm visitor access before travel. Never enter flooded chambers or work areas.
Availability: unknown.
https://go2pogradec.al/atraksione/historia-dhe-arkeologjia-1/varret-monumentale-ne-selcen-e-poshtme-7/

### Selcë · when a new road changes a city’s fortunes
Albania’s UNESCO tentative-list submission links Selcë’s decline to the construction of Via Egnatia. It is a striking account of a road changing trade, not simply enriching every place nearby. This is the submission’s interpretation, not a settled claim about every cause of decline. Tentative listing is not World Heritage inscription.
Availability: unknown.
https://whc.unesco.org/en/tentativelists/909/

### Selcë access · check restoration and the approach
RTSH reported protective-shelter maintenance beginning on 9 October 2026. That does not establish either full closure or unrestricted opening. The municipality’s undated page also flags reconstruction on the Golik–Selcë approach and water in tomb 2. Confirm the road and permitted visitor areas with local heritage staff before leaving your base; do not improvise a bypass or enter works.
Availability: unknown.
https://rtsh.al/rti/en/restoration-work-begins-at-selca-monumental-tombs/

### Lin · the village, peninsula and basilica
Keep time for village lanes and a peninsula walk. The tourism agency describes a nature trail and the early Christian basilica; ask which paths and monument areas are accessible and whether mosaics can be seen. Our village pin is not a trailhead. Lin comes after the Mokra visits and before Pogradec; this edition finishes in Pogradec, not at the historical road’s eastern terminus.
Availability: unknown.
https://akt.gov.al/en/trashegimia/fshati-lin/

### Pogradec · a lakeside town for the last day
Finish with a walk beside Lake Ohrid, then explore the old town’s Ottoman and Balkan architecture highlighted by the national tourism agency. After the smaller heritage sites, leave room for everyday city streets and time by the water. Pogradec is the final overnight base and departure point of this visitor itinerary, not the ancient road’s terminus. The city pin is not a promenade entrance, hotel or pickup location.
Availability: unknown.
https://akt.gov.al/en/qytetet/pogradec/

### Shën Marena · the ceiling is part of the story
Near Llëngë, look beyond the frescoes to the painted wooden ceiling and carved iconostasis. The municipality attributes the church paintings to Kostandin Shpataraku in 1754 and compares the iconostasis style with Voskopojë and Vithkuq. Confirm church opening and the high-clearance 4×4 approach to Kryqi plus final walk. The spring and cave have religious traditions; do not drink untreated water, enter an unassessed cave or collect stones.
Availability: unknown.
https://go2pogradec.al/atraksione/historia-dhe-arkeologjia-1/manastiri-i-shen-marenes-ne-llenge-14/

### Potkozhani · leave time for an ordinary village
The tourism agency identifies Potkozhani as a cultural village destination with one of the area’s oldest schools. Visit for the village rather than an invented attraction schedule. Ask permission before photographing people or entering buildings; arrange transport and any meal separately. Its inclusion in Mokra N’Fest material is cultural context, not a festival promised on your travel date.
Availability: unknown.
https://akt.gov.al/en/event/festivity/

### Guri i Kamjes · a ship of stone
From the surrounding landscape, the rock resembles a ship above the forest. The municipality publishes a drive-and-walk outing from Pogradec. Confirm the actual walking start, road access and weather locally; the pin is the natural feature, not a parking space. Enjoy the rock without assuming summit scrambling is suitable for everyone. This is a landscape extension, not a Roman-road claim.
Availability: unknown.
https://go2pogradec.al/ture/ture-aventure-2/shtegu-pogradec-guri-i-kamjes-3/

### Voskopojë · follow the painted-church story south
Give the frescoes and icons time, with opening arrangements confirmed locally. The national tourism agency highlights the churches of Shën Mëria and Shën Kolli. This is a later cultural extension near Korçë, not a verified stop on the Roman trunk road. Plan an extra night and a separate onward journey; do not assume a direct Mokra mountain shortcut. The village pin is not a church entrance.
Availability: unknown.
https://akt.gov.al/en/kishe/kishat-e-voskopojes/

### Apollonia · the other western beginning
The park near Fier belongs to the other western branch of the story. Plan a separate outing from Durrës, confirming entrance, admission and return transport. Its older coordinate candidates conflict, so no park pin is displayed.
Availability: unknown.
https://akt.gov.al/en/archaeological-site/apollonia/

### One Albania chapter of a much longer story
The historic road connected its Adriatic branches through Elbasan, Ohrid and Bitola to Thessaloniki, with a later extension to Byzantium, now Istanbul. Our visitor itinerary explores places around that story; it is not an exact reconstruction or continuous through-hike.
Availability: unknown.

### For a longer walk, start with the specialist guide
